The Importance of Early Childhood Music for Your Child

From infancy to age 9, our classes for early learners help to guide students through developmentally appropriate lessons that are sequenced perfectly to foster their understanding of music. Our classes and lessons provide foundational learning that will benefit them for their entire life of music making and are not only their first introduction to music, but also the most important.

The early years of life are especially crucial for establishing a foundation for lifelong music development. A child’s musical experiences from birth to age five have a profound impact on the extent to which they will be able to understand, appreciate, and achieve in music as an adult. Children must be exposed to a rich variety of music during these years in order to develop the necessary readiness for formal music learning when they are older.

Here at Songs with Sarah Music School, we have based our approach to educating young child on the music psychologist Edwin E. Gordon, who spent his entire teaching and researching career - almost 60 years - investigating HOW children learn music. Not how we think they should learn, but how they truly are able to learn and how best to do it.

While the most important time in a child’s musical life is during what Gordon calls the critical age, which is from birth to around 18 months. It is never too late to start your child in the process of lifelong music learning. This is why we have so many options for our youngest learners to jump in and shape their experience with music! We have a thriving Babies Class (ages 0-12 months), Music Play (ages 0-4), and Keyboard Games piano classes (ages 4+) to give your child a perfectly sequenced approach to learning music.

All of our early childhood teachers are skilled educators of music and have spent countless hours training in early childhood music development. Please continue to read about our programs or feel free to reach out to us for any questions!
